What are FSC & PEFC?

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) constitute the two preeminent global frameworks for sustainable forest management and Chain of Custody (CoC) verification. While they operate as distinct organizations, both share a common mandate: to provide a rigorous, third-party assurance mechanism that wood and paper-based products originate from responsibly managed forests, controlled sources, or reclaimed materials.

Core Purpose: To establish an unbroken chain of traceability from the forest floor to the final consumer, ensuring that certified materials are not commingled with wood from illegal or controversial sources.

Primary Objective: To promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests by leveraging market mechanisms and supply chain transparency.

Applicability: Essential for any organization in the timber supply chain—including sawmills, furniture manufacturers, paper mills, printers, and traders—seeking to demonstrate compliance with responsible sourcing policies and global timber regulations (such as the EU Deforestation Regulation).

Benefits

Access to Global Markets: Many buyers in Europe and the USA will only buy wood or paper if it has the FSC or PEFC stamp. Without it, you lose these customers.

Proof of Legality: It proves your wood is not illegal. This helps you comply with strict laws like the EUTR (Europe) or Lacey Act (USA).

Higher Product Value: Certified products are seen as “premium.” You can often sell them at a better price than non-certified products.

Brand Reputation: Using the FSC/PEFC logo on your packaging or furniture shows the world that your company cares about protecting forests and fighting deforestation.

Win Government Tenders: Many governments (including Malaysia) prefer to buy green, certified paper and furniture for their offices.

The Certification Process

Step 1: Gap Analysis
We inspect your factory or warehouse. We check how you currently buy, store, and sell wood/paper. We verify if you have a system to keep certified material separate from non-certified material.

Step 2: Awareness Training
We train your team on “Chain of Custody” (CoC). We explain the critical rules: do not mix the wood, check your supplier’s certificate validity, and use the correct invoices.

Step 3: Document Support
We help you create the mandatory Due Diligence System (DDS). We also help you prepare your Volume Summaries (records of how much you bought vs. how much you sold) and outsourcing agreements.

Step 4: Internal Audit & MRM
We do a “practice run” audit. We check your calculations (Input vs. Output) to ensure the numbers match. We also hold a Management Review Meeting (MRM) to fix any gaps.

Step 5: Final Audit
An external Certification Body (CB) visits your site. They check your purchasing records, inspect your production segregation, and verify your sales invoices.

Step 6: Success!
Upon passing the audit, you receive your FSC or PEFC License Code. You can now use the official logo on your products and invoices.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the difference between FSC and PEFC?
A: They are two different organizations. FSC is a single global standard (often preferred by NGOs and big brands). PEFC acts as an “umbrella” that recognizes national standards (like MTCS in Malaysia). Both are widely accepted, but your customer might prefer one over the other.

Q: Do I need both certificates?
A: It depends on your customers. Some buyers only accept FSC; others accept PEFC. Many large manufacturers hold both certificates (Dual Certification) so they can sell to everyone.

Q: Can I mix FSC and PEFC wood?
A: No. You must keep them separate. You cannot sell PEFC wood with an FSC label, and vice versa. Your inventory system must track them separately.

Q: How long does the certificate last?
A: The certificate is valid for 5 years, but you must have an audit every year (surveillance audit) to ensure you are still following the rules.
