What is RBA?

The Responsible Business Alliance (RBA), formerly the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC), constitutes the world’s largest industry coalition dedicated to corporate social responsibility in global supply chains. It establishes the RBA Code of Conduct, a stringent set of standards that ensures working conditions are safe, workers are treated with respect and dignity, and business operations are environmentally responsible and ethically conducted.

Core Purpose: To provide a unified, industry-wide standard for social, environmental, and ethical compliance, primarily within the electronics, automotive, and retail sectors.

Primary Objective: To drive sustainable value for workers, the environment, and business by strictly auditing labor practices (specifically targeting forced labor), health and safety, and environmental impact.

Applicability: Essential for suppliers in the global electronics supply chain—serving giants like Intel, Dell, Apple, and Microsoft—who must undergo the Validated Assessment Program (VAP) to retain their contracts.

Benefits

Sell to Tech Giants: Major electronics companies (like Apple, HP, and Dell) require their suppliers to follow RBA rules. You often cannot supply to them without this.

One Audit for Everyone: RBA uses the VAP (Validated Assessment Program). Once you pass a VAP audit, you can share the result with all your customers. You don’t need 10 different audits.

Stop Forced Labor: RBA is very strict about “Zero Recruitment Fees.” Implementing this protects you from legal trouble and “modern slavery” accusations.

Global Recognition: The RBA audit is one of the toughest and most respected in the world. Passing it proves you are a top-tier, ethical manufacturer.

Better Management: It forces you to have clear management systems for ethics and safety, making your business run smoother and with less risk.

The Certification Process

Step 1: Gap Analysis
We inspect your factory and dormitories. We check your current practices against the 5 sections of the RBA Code of Conduct (Labor, Health & Safety, Environment, Ethics, and Management Systems).

Step 2: Awareness Training
We train your management team. We focus heavily on the “Zero Recruitment Fee” policy (employers must pay for recruitment, not workers) and strict working hour limits.

Step 3: Document Support
We help you organize your records. We ensure your payroll, overtime logs, chemical safety records, and ethics policies are accurate and ready for the strict VAP audit.

Step 4: Internal Audit & MRM
We do a “mock VAP audit.” We interview foreign workers to check for forced labor indicators and inspect the site. We then hold a Management Review Meeting (MRM) to fix any “Priority Non-Conformances.”

Step 5: Final Audit
An approved third-party audit firm visits your factory. They conduct the official Validated Assessment Program (VAP) audit, which includes deep worker interviews and document reviews.

Step 6: Success!
Based on your score, you receive a recognition status (Platinum, Gold, or Silver). This report is visible to your customers in the RBA Online system.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is RBA only for electronics companies?
A: It started that way (as EICC), but now it is used by the Automotive (cars) and Toy industries too. If you supply parts to these industries, you may need RBA.

Q: What is the VAP?
A: VAP stands for Validated Assessment Program. It is the official RBA audit. It is trusted because the auditors are specially trained and the results are checked by RBA quality control.

Q: What is “Silver, Gold, and Platinum” status?
A: These are the scores you get from a VAP audit:

  • Platinum: Score 200 (Perfect, no problems).

  • Gold: Score 180+ (No major problems).

  • Silver: Score 160+ (Some problems, but fixed).

Q: Why is RBA so strict on “Recruitment Fees”?
A: RBA believes that if a worker has to pay money (debt) to get a job, it is a form of “Forced Labor” (Slavery). To pass RBA, the employer must pay all recruitment costs, not the worker.

Q: How long is the audit valid?
A: A VAP audit report is typically valid for 2 years, provided you close any issues found during the audit.
