What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001 constitutes the globally recognized standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OH&S). It provides a robust, proactive framework that empowers organizations to prevent work-related injury and ill health while actively improving their occupational health and safety performance.
Core Purpose: To operationalize a strategic safety culture that shifts focus from reactive hazard control to proactive risk elimination, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for employees, contractors, and visitors.
Primary Objective: To systematically identify, evaluate, and mitigate physical and psychosocial risks, ensuring full compliance with legal obligations such as the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994 in Malaysia.
Applicability: Essential for any organization—from construction and manufacturing to corporate offices—seeking to minimize liability, protect their workforce, and demonstrate an unyielding commitment to safety excellence.
Benefits
Comply with DOSH Rules: It helps you meet the strict regulations set by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH/JKKP), avoiding fines and stop-work orders.
Reduce Accidents: By finding risks early, you prevent injuries. Fewer accidents mean fewer medical claims and less downtime.
Lower Insurance Costs: Insurance companies often give lower premiums to companies with ISO 45001 because they are seen as “low risk.”
Win Big Contracts: Many oil & gas, construction, and government projects (like Petronas or JKR) require suppliers to be ISO 45001 certified.
Boost Staff Morale: When workers see you investing in their safety, they feel valued and work harder.
The Certification Process
Step 1: Gap Analysis
We inspect your workplace to check your current safety measures against ISO 45001 standards. We look for physical hazards (like unguarded machines) and missing paperwork.
Step 2: Awareness Training
We train your safety committee and staff. We teach them how to identify hazards (HIRARC) and what their role is in keeping the workplace safe.
Step 3: Document Support
We help you create the mandatory documents. This includes your OH&S Policy, emergency response plans, and risk assessment records (HIRARC).
Step 4: Internal Audit & MRM
We do a “practice run” audit to ensure your system works. We also hold a Management Review Meeting (MRM) to fix any safety gaps before the real audit.
Step 5: Final Audit
An external certification body audits your company. They inspect your site, interview workers, and check your safety records to confirm compliance.
Step 6: Success!
Upon passing the audit, your company is officially awarded the ISO 45001 Certification.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Is ISO 45001 different from OHSAS 18001?
A: Yes. OHSAS 18001 is the “old” standard and is no longer valid. ISO 45001 is the new global standard. It focuses more on “management leadership” and “worker participation” than the old rules.
Q: Does this replace MS 1722?
A: MS 1722 is the Malaysian standard, while ISO 45001 is the international standard. Most Malaysian companies now prefer ISO 45001 because it is recognized worldwide, but it also covers the requirements of MS 1722.
Q: Is this only for high-risk industries like construction?
A: No. While vital for construction and factories, it is also used by IT companies, banks, and offices to manage risks like stress, ergonomics (back pain), and office safety.
Q: How long does the certificate last?
A: The certificate is valid for 3 years, subject to an annual check-up (surveillance audit) to ensure you are still maintaining a safe workplace.
