What is RSPO?

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) constitutes the preeminent global standard for sustainable palm oil production. As a multi-stakeholder non-profit initiative, it unites oil palm producers, processors, traders, and retailers to develop and implement the rigorous RSPO Principles and Criteria (P&C).

Core Purpose: To transform markets to make sustainable palm oil the norm by ensuring legal compliance, economic viability, and environmental preservation.

Primary Objective: To mitigate negative impacts on the ecosystem by strictly prohibiting deforestation (No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation – NDPE) and protecting High Conservation Value (HCV) areas.

Applicability: Designed for forward-thinking organizations—from plantations to consumer goods manufacturers—seeking to demonstrate the highest level of commitment to sustainability and gain access to premium international markets.

Benefits

Premium Pricing: RSPO-certified palm oil is a premium product. You can often sell it at a higher price than standard oil.

Access to Western Markets: Many buyers in Europe and the USA only buy RSPO-certified oil. This certification opens doors to these wealthy markets.

Preferred Supplier Status: Big global brands (like Nestlé, Unilever, and P&G) prioritize suppliers who have RSPO certification.

Investor Confidence: It proves to banks and investors that your company is low-risk because you care about the environment and human rights (ESG goals).

Protect the Environment: It proves you are not destroying forests or harming endangered animals, which is great for your company’s public image.

The Certification Process

Step 1: Gap Analysis
We visit your estate or mill to check your practices against the strict RSPO Principles & Criteria. We specifically check if you have identified “High Conservation Value” (HCV) areas that must be protected.

Step 2: Awareness Training
We train your team on the high standards of RSPO. We focus on “No Deforestation” rules, protecting peatlands, and ensuring Fair Labor practices for all workers.

Step 3: Document Support
We help you prepare the complex reports. This includes your Social Impact Assessments, Environmental Management Plans, and records of “Free, Prior and Informed Consent” (FPIC) with local communities.

Step 4: Internal Audit & MRM
We do a “practice run” audit to ensure your estate is ready. We also facilitate a Management Review Meeting (MRM) to fix any gaps in your social or environmental performance.

Step 5: Final Audit
An accredited external auditor inspects your site. They rigorously check your fields, interview your workers, and review your map data to ensure you meet RSPO standards.

Step 6: Success!
Upon passing the audit, your company is officially awarded the RSPO Certification and can trade on the RSPO PalmTrace platform.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the difference between MSPO and RSPO?
A: MSPO is mandatory for Malaysia; it is the “license to operate.” RSPO is voluntary and is a “premium” standard. RSPO is much stricter regarding deforestation and is required for export to Europe/USA.

Q: Is RSPO only for big plantations?
A: No. There is a specific standard for “Independent Smallholders” to help smaller farmers get certified and sell credits to earn extra money.

Q: Does this cover the supply chain?
A: Yes. If you are a refinery or a trader, you need RSPO Supply Chain Certification (SCC) to prove that the oil you are selling is truly sustainable.

Q: How long does the certificate last?
A: The certificate is valid for 5 years, but you must have an audit every year (surveillance audit) to keep it.
