What is SA 8000?

SA 8000 constitutes the premier international standard for Social Accountability, developed by Social Accountability International (SAI). It establishes a rigorous, auditable framework based on international workplace norms, including the ILO conventions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Core Purpose: To provide a credible assurance mechanism that validates an organization’s commitment to ethical working conditions, ensuring the fair treatment of workers across the entire supply chain.

Primary Objective: To operationalize social performance by systematically monitoring and improving compliance in critical areas such as child labor, forced labor, health and safety, freedom of association, discrimination, and working hours.

Applicability: Essential for global manufacturers, brands, and suppliers—regardless of industry—seeking to demonstrate social responsibility, mitigate supply chain risks, and satisfy the ethical procurement mandates of major international retailers.

Benefits

Protect Your Brand: It proves you do not use child labor or forced labor. This protects your company’s reputation from scandals and bad news.

Sell to Big Retailers: Major global brands (like H&M, Walmart, and Disney) often refuse to buy from factories that are not certified. This certificate opens those doors.

Happy Workers: When you treat workers fairly (safe conditions, fair pay), they work harder and stay longer. This reduces hiring costs and increases productivity.

Less Risk: It helps you find and fix safety issues (like fire hazards) before an accident happens.

Global Trust: It is recognized worldwide. A factory with SA 8000 is immediately trusted by buyers in Europe and the USA.

The Certification Process

Step 1: Gap Analysis
We inspect your workplace and HR records. We check your current wages, working hours, and safety conditions against the SA 8000 standard to see exactly what is missing.

Step 2: Awareness Training
We train your management and the “Social Performance Team” (SPT). We explain key concepts like overtime limits, fair wages, and worker rights so everyone understands the requirements.

Step 3: Document Support
We help you create the critical documents. This includes your Social Accountability Policy, procedures for handling worker complaints, and accurate records of working hours and payroll.

Step 4: Internal Audit & MRM
We do a “practice run” audit to ensure you are compliant. We interview workers privately (just like the real auditor will) and hold a Management Review Meeting (MRM) to fix any issues.

Step 5: Final Audit
An external certification body audits your company. They inspect your factory, review your payroll records, and interview your staff to confirm they are treated fairly and ethically.

Step 6: Success!
Upon passing the audit, your company is officially awarded the SA 8000 Certification.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is SA 8000 the same as Sedex (SMETA)?
A: No. Sedex (SMETA) is an audit report (a snapshot of today). SA 8000 is a certification (a commitment to a management system). SA 8000 is generally considered stricter and more prestigious than a basic Sedex audit.

Q: Does this cover suppliers?
A: Yes. SA 8000 requires you to also monitor your suppliers. You cannot be certified if your suppliers are using child labor.

Q: What is the hardest part of SA 8000?
A: Usually, it is Working Hours. The standard strictly limits overtime. Many factories struggle to reduce working hours while keeping production high, but we help you plan for this.

Q: How long does the certificate last?
A: The certificate is valid for 3 years, but you will have a surveillance audit every 6 months or 1 year to ensure you are still treating workers fairly.
